Item A Comparative Evaluation of the Networks of Three Nigerian Federal Universities for Effective Library Services(Ghana Library Journal, Ghana, 2013) Abduldayan, F.J.; Oluwade, B.; Oyedum, G.U.This paper is a comparative evaluation of the networks of three Nigerian federal universities and how such networks can be used to enhance library services. The university networks included in this study are the Federal University of Technology Minna Network (FUTMINNet), University of Jos Network (UNIJOSNet) and University of Lagos Network (UNILAGNet). University of Minna (FUTMIN), established in the 1980s, belongs to the third generation of Nigerian universities; University of Jos (UNIJOS) (established in the 1970s) belongs to the second generation, while University of Lagos (UNILAG) (which was established in the 1960s) belongs to the first generation. Both FUTMIN and UNIJOS are located in North Central geo-political zone of Nigeria while UNILAG is located in the South West zone. The research design employed was the survey method (involving the use of questionnaire, interview, and direct observation) to study the wired and wireless connectivity of the networks of the three universities and compare them against criteria such as network speed, bandwidth, latency, and user response. Structured and semi-structured questionnaires were administered to the network users of each of the three universities, giving a total of 300 questionnaires for the study. The result of the study shows that UNIJOSNet is the fastest while in terms of the wired service, UNILAGNet is the fastest. FUTMINNet is not performing well compared with the UNIJOSNet and UNILAGNet, or not satisfying its users at a satisfactory level. Wireless services of UNIJOSNet and UNILAGNet, which in turn affects the quality of library services offered to users. Wireless services of FUTMINNet do not adequately meet the expectations of users of library services. The paper recommends that the library network services of UNILAGNet has the best performance, while FUTMINNet needs the most improvement. Finally, universities need to enhance their wireless networks by upgrading and expanding the network components and infrastructures of all the networks, especially FUTMINNet.Item Assessment of Plagiarism in Undergraduate Projects in the Department of Library and Information Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State(Nigerian Libraries: Journal of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), 2017) Abduldayan, F.J.; Obaje, A.M.; Oyedum, G.U.The study examined students' plagiarism in undergraduate final year projects for the 2014/2015 academic session in the Department of Library and Information Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna. Turnitin anti-plagiarism software was used in checking the similarity index and percentage of plagiarized content in the students’ projects. The acceptable benchmark for similarity index was 20% in line with the University policy. All the cases of plagiarism are treated as a case of examination misconduct by the University. The study utilized the analysis of Turnitin anti-plagiarism software as the method for determining the rate of plagiarism. The total population of 42 students for the 2014/2015 was considered, of which 31 (73.8%) successfully trained in their work and graduated with percentages ranging from 14% to 20% similarity indices. The study determined different tricks and methods adopted by students in manipulating the results of Turnitin in order to get the acceptable percentages. Findings revealed some of the challenges faced by students while using Turnitin for plagiarism check. These included students’ lack of paraphrasing skills, time constraints, and lack of continuous monitoring of students’ progress by faculty instructors. The study concluded that Turnitin has helped improve students’ work integrity among students and staff and has also ensured integrity in intellectual outputs emanating from the university. This has led to the increased research visibility and academic ranking of the Federal University of Technology, Minna on the Web. The study recommended that the University should encourage all students to start turning in their work early and not at the end of the project, as this would give them time to paraphrase their work before submission deadlines. The need for comprehensive training on how to paraphrase contents was also recommended.Item Demographic Characteristics, Awareness, and Utilization Patterns of Public Libraries in Nigeria: Implications for Promoting Access to Knowledge and User Engagement in Nigeria(Journal of Information Resource Management, 2023) Attah, T. A; Usman, A. A; Abduldayan, F.J.This study is on public libraries’ roles in helping achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on Poverty Eradication in Nigeria. Poverty has long been a challenge that has faced humanity as many struggle to make ends meet and get a decent living for themselves. We live in an ‘Information Age’ where people equipped with the right information are able to make better decisions and better their lives. Public libraries exist as an information household that can provide people with the right information to better their status and quality of life as a whole. This study identified the demographic characteristics of public library users in Nigeria, investigated the level of awareness of public libraries, the frequency of use of the library, identified the reasons for visiting public libraries, the types of resources and services that users consult, and finally, suggested strategies that could be employed by public libraries in achieving the SDG goals on poverty eradication in Nigeria. A survey was carried out using online Google Forms as the data collection instrument. Questions were generated in line with the research objectives and a link to the form was shared on social media with 238 young adult Nigerians from 25 selected states across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Findings revealed that 54.9% of male students that fall within the age range of 15-25 years from tertiary institutions form the highest number of public library users in Nigeria. Despite half of the respondents being aware of public libraries, the majority do not visit, with only a small percentage visiting on a daily basis. Borrowing books and other information materials as well as studying are the main reasons for visiting public libraries in Nigeria. The study recommended the importance of increasing awareness of public libraries, and partnership and collaboration with other libraries and organisations in rolling out programs on poverty eradication for youths.Item Development of Marking Scheme(In Ohize, E.J. et al (Eds). This is because teaching has intended outcomes that are geared towards behavioural change. In this regard, a good teacher assesses the progress of the students through tests, assignments among others using standardized criteria. It goes without saying that adopting a standard for marking students’ scripts is a fantastic tool to help teachers ensure that marking is consistent across all students’ scripts in a particular examination, test or assignment. Hence, this unit explores the development of a good marking scheme suitable for eliminating teachers’ biasness when marking.Item Effects of Reprography and Use of Electronic Resources on Book Buying by Students of Tertiary Institutions in Niger State(Journal of Applied Information Science and Technology, 2017) Alhassan, J.A; Yusuf, H.; Abduldayan, F.J.; Akor, P.U.This study examined effects of reprography and use of e-resources on book buying by students in selected tertiary institutions in Niger state. The objectives of the study were to determine: the rate of other means of reproducing work on book trade, the benefits of using e-resources, challenges of book trade in Niger state and to find out the rate of using e-resources by the students of tertiary institutions in Niger state. Descriptive survey was used for the study in three selected tertiary institutions in Niger state, these were Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna, Federal Polytechnic, Bida and Federal College of Education, Kontagora. The population of the study consisted of students of the institutions which was 23,061. 300 respondents were sampled using Simple random technique, that is, 100 respondents from each institution. Structured questionnaires were used to gather data while data collected was analyzed using frequency count and simple percentages. Findings revealed that the respondents photocopy book materials and also make use of electronic resources when searching for information, but that majority of the respondents do not buy books. The study recommends that students should cultivate the culture of buying books, rather than photocopying so as to uphold both the standard and professional excellence in higher institutions. The study recommended that electronic information resources should be made available and students should effectively utilize the needed.Item Evaluation of Sectoral Implementation of the Nigerian National IT Policy(Social Science Research Network, USA,, 2014) Olatokun, W.M.; Abduldayan, F.J.The Nigerian National IT policy (USE IT) was formulated in March 2001 with sixteen sectoral application areas and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) was established as the implementation agency. Out of these sixteen sectoral applications, this study sought to determine the extent of implementation of t he policy in six sectors - health, agriculture, urban and rural development, arts, culture and tourism, national security and law enforcement as well as research and development. Ministries and agencies relevant to each sector were studied and the extent of implementation of the IT policy was evaluated. The study also assessed the newly drafted national ICT Policy to determine whether areas in the current national 11 policy that are yet to be satisfactorily implemented have been taken care of. The implementation of the national 11 policy in health, agriculture, Nigeria Police Force as well as in the research and development sector was adjudged very satisfactory, that of urban and rural development and Nigeria Immigration Service was seen as average; while it was adjudged unsatisfactory in Arts. Culture and Tourism sector. A review of the newly drafted national ICT policy revealed that some of the identified gaps in the current national IT policy had been incorporated to some extent while recommendations were made tor the other areas.Item Funding as Correlates of Library Service Delivery for Students with Special Needs in North Central Nigeria(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2020) Madu, E. C.; Gomna, M. A.; Omame, I. M.; Abduldayan, F.J.This paper assessed funding as correlates of library service delivery in schools which have students with special needs in North central, Nigeria. The study was guided by three objectives and three corresponding research questions. Survey research design method was adopted for the study. The total population for the study was three hundred and nine (309) secondary school students in the three schools which have students with special needs. A total of two hundred and forty six (246) copies of questionnaire were filled, returned and found usable for the analysis representing 80% response rate. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Descriptive statistical such as frequency counts and percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data. The results from the findings showed that the major sources of funding for special needs schools under study are: Subvention from State Government, NonGovernmental Organisation (NGOs) and Religious Group. In addition, the major services offered by these libraries are circulation services, document delivery services and reference services. The analysis of the findings further revealed that lack of fund to procure library resources is one of the major problems affecting effective service delivery among the libraries under study. H.The study examined the impact of climate change on service delivery in the National Library of Nigeria, Ilorin; University of Ilorin Library; and National Stored Products Research Institute Library, Ilorin. The study was guided by five (5) research objectives and questions that sought to identify the level of awareness of library staff on climate change, the impact of climate change on information resources and library building, available plans and preventive measures against the impact of climate change on the libraries, and challenges faced by libraries in combating the effect of climate change. The population of the study was eighty-seven (87), hence, total enumeration was used for the study. Seventy-four (74) copies of questionnaire were filled, returned and used for the analysis. Questionnaire and observation checklists were used as instruments for data gathering. Simple percentages and tables were used for data analysis and presentation of findings. Findings revealed that the majority of the respondents are aware of environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity, light, air pollution, greenhouse gases and global warming which affect libraries, books and information resources. However, climate change has the highest negative impact on books in the libraries studied. Climate change also affected the walls of library buildings, ventilation and temperature. The following recommendations were made among others: training and workshops should be organized for library staff on climate change and its effects on libraries. Continual rehabilitation of dilapidated library buildings to control the impact of climate change and finally, procurement of modern technological gadgets to curtail changes in climate.Item Leveraging on University’s Electronic Mailing System for Effective Provision of Selective Dissemination of Information in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library, FUT Minna, Niger State(Proceedings of the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Library Association, Niger State Chapter, Federal Polytechnic Bida, 2017) Abduldayan, F.J.; Galadima, J.H.; Jimoh, S.A.This research is on the use of university’s emailing system in the provision of effective selective dissemination of information in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida library, Federal University of Technology, Minna. Emailing system is a technology that can be deployed on any mobile technologies especially mobile smart phones, tablets, and other handheld devices. Preliminary investigations revealed uncertainty on the rate of use of mobile technology in providing SDI in the university library neither is there a comprehensive database captured for such purpose. As a result, this research is aimed at studying the level of awareness the provision of SDI has attained in the university, the presence of mobile technology infrastructure put in place, hindrances to provision of this service via mobile technology and necessary steps to curb the stated hindrances and challenges. A survey research design was adopted in the study and the target population were the academic researchers and librarians who were administered questionnaires and interviewed respectively. A total of 755 copies of questionnaire were administered; 389 copies were returned and found usable. The collected data was analyzed and presented using simple percentages and frequency counts whereby the responses were made across different ranks in the academic cadre and two librarians were interviewed. Findings revealed that lack of constant internet data bundle and mobile access to emails hindered effective access to SDI on the part of researchers, while librarians were faced with several delays due to bureaucratic processes for considering submitted reports as well as funding of internal projects and network downtime challenges on the part of library administrators. The study recommended that the school should improve SDI awareness among researchers through HOD’s and Deans of Schools especially during board meetings, and adopting an automated SDI system supported with a clear-cut policy for SDI provision in the university.Item Populating Institutional Repositories in Nigeria using Research Data: Challenges and prospects(A paper presented at the Hybrid Conference of Authors, Researchers, Editors, and Scholars (COARES 2020), 2020) Abduldayan, F.J.Item Research data management practices of chemistry researchers in federal universities of technology in Nigeria(Digital Library Perspectives, 2021) Abduldayan, F.J.; Abifarin, F.P.; Oyedum, G.U.; Alhassan, J.A.This is an exploratory study on the research data management practice of chemistry researchers in federal universities of technology in Nigeria. Research data are increasingly becoming important and are required by journal publishers and international funders to be carefully gathered and properly kept for validation of results, sharing, and future reuse. These chemistry researchers were purposively selected across the five federal universities of technology in Nigeria, namely Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMIN), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University of Technology, Bauchi (ATBU), and Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola (MAUTECH). A qualitative research technique using a semi-structured interview schedule was used to gather data from forty (40) chemistry researchers across the five federal universities of technology in Nigeria. These chemistry researchers were those with either a doctoral degree or currently undergoing doctoral training across all available options and ranks in chemistry. Interview questions were divided into four major sections covering chemistry researchers’ understanding of research data, experience with data loss, data storage methods and backup techniques, data protection, data preservation, and the availability of a data management plan. Findings, as derived from thematic analysis of transcribed responses, revealed that chemistry researchers' research data management practices need a lot of improvement to ensure long-term access, preservation, and reuse of their research data. The study recommended the need for libraries to embark on awareness and education of chemistry researchers on the benefits of good research data management practices.Item The Role of Academic Libraries in Enhancing Workflow in African Universities(Proceedings of the International Conference on Information and Communication Technology and Its Applications, School of Information and Communication Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2016) Abduldayan, F.J.; Dang, T.L.; Karemani, A.; Obadia, S.B.An academic library may be beautifully designed but with little impact on the research output of its users. This study identified these gaps with reference to African libraries. Researchers, irrespective of their areas of interest, have a common research workflow which defines the entire research process. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be embedded at every level of the workflow, creating an enabling research environment to ease research processes and better output. Academic librarians, as part of their role in supporting teaching, learning, and research, are expected to introduce, advocate, and create awareness and offer support services on available relevant products and services that can be embedded at every level of the research workflow. This study identified new products and services and suggested how they should be embedded through the research process. The study concluded that embedding these new products and services in research workflow will improve the quality of researches emanating from Africa and ultimately improve our research visibility globally.Item Undergraduate Students’ Use of E-Resources in University Libraries in Niger State(Benue Journal of Library, Management and Information Science (BJLMIS), Makurdi, 2015) Oyedum, G.U; Chukwu, P.; Abduldayan, F.J.; Abedoh, G.O.Effective use of e-resources in university libraries is necessary for the academic development of students. This paper, therefore, assessed the relative effect of the available e-resources on undergraduate students' use of university libraries in Niger State. The study also ascertained the e-resources that made the greatest contribution to students' use of the libraries. A survey research design was used for the study, and the study population was 130 undergraduate students from Federal University of Technology, Minna, and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. The main instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. The two libraries, as the study revealed, mainly subscribe to Science Direct for accessibility of e-resources. The study revealed that e-resources such as e-journals, bibliographic databases, e-books, e-databases, e-newspapers, and e-magazines, among others, were available in the university libraries studied. The study also revealed that, of all the available e-resources considered together, e-journals and bibliographic databases made the greatest contributions, which are significant to undergraduate students' use of the university libraries. To enhance the level of use of e-resources and the entire libraries by undergraduate students, the majority of the students indicated the need for the provision of stable network services, followed by an alternative power supply system and the provision of a regulatory body to govern the use of e-resources in the libraries.Item Use of Library Resources by the Undergraduate Students in Nigerian Federal Universities(Information Trends, Kaduna, 2014) Oyedum, G. U.; Abduldayan, F.J.; Chuks-Ibe, P.O.Students' use of university library resources is essential in order to achieve their educational objectives in the universities. This paper, therefore, assessed the level of undergraduate students' use of library resources in Nigerian federal universities. The study also ascertained which of the library resources the undergraduate students use most in the university libraries. The survey research method was used for the study and the study population was 1,453 undergraduate students from across Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Science, and Social Science faculties in the selected universities. The main instrument used for the data collection was a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage tabulation were used in analyzing the data. Results revealed that the level of students' use of library resources in Nigerian federal universities is low. The study also revealed that students frequently visit the federal university libraries in Nigeria in order to use resources to support their classwork activities. To increase the level of library use by undergraduate students in Nigerian federal universities, the majority of the respondents indicated the need for the provision of electronic resources/internet-connected computers and the creation of a more conducive atmosphere, among other recommendations, to attract students to effectively use the university libraries.
