The paper went further to review the researches and related studies on the subject matter and also gave recommendation and conclusions which all emanates from the researchItem ACCESS TO COMMUNICATION BASED TECHNOLOGY AS A PANACEA FOR KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AMONG FACULTY OFFICERS IN AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA, KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA(Pakistan Librarians Welfare Organization (PLWO), 2022-09-15) Suleiman, Hussaini; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jaafar, Sani; Jimada, AishaThis article was undertaken to investigate Access to Communication based Technology as a Panacea for Knowledge Management among Faculty Officers in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions and objectives. The research methodology was purely quantitative and a descriptive research design was used. The study population includes 108 Faculty Officers in the five Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Schools, Shika Zaria. Yamani's formula was used to determine the target population sample of 91 respondents. A questionnaire was used to collect data. A simple random sampling method was used as the sampling method to collect data from the study area. The tool was subjected to face and content validity. The pilot study was conducted at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria’s main campus, which was outside the key study areas but with similar characteristics, and was also tested for reliability using a split- half test, and obtained a reliability coefficient of 0.81. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Statistical Package for Social Science version 21.0. Among other things, the results of the study showed that the greater part of respondents indicated that email, online relay chats, Internet telephony, instant messaging, web services, and video conferencing were the types of Internet facilities or services required and accessible for Ahmadu Bello University Faculty Officers Shika Zaria Most respondents indicated that some of the factors that discourage the use of Internet facilities by Faculty Officers are lack of Internet access and inappropriate research on Internet skills. Online information seeking behavior is a relatively new phenomenon. However, it is the active process of obtaining data from the Web. Libraries and Universities are continuously adapting and seeking effective ways to respond to the fundamental and interconnected missions of research, teaching and community service, and that is why some have embraced the use of the Internet in service delivery. On the other hand, this study is more concerned with maximizing usage of this resource by students in fulfilling their primary aim of research and reaching out to these resources on the Internet using the requisite navigational skills. The paper says the Internet offers widespread access to electronic resources and also has the advantages of interactivity, and information tailoring. It also agrees that access is inequitable and use is hindered by navigational challenges due to numerous factors e.g. disorganization, technical language and lack of permanence. Meager information evaluation skills add to students' vulnerability. The paper highlights some information seeking models to assist students in their search for information on the Internet. Also it highlights the role of the library in the information seeking process of students. The paper highlighted the various strategies employed by academic libraries in digital preservation of their scholarly publications by the application of the appropriate information and communication technologies. Identified strategies for digital preservation by academic libraries as highlighted by this paper include the followings, investment strategies,short-time and long-time strategies. The study identified the re-use of ICT, especially the software component play a vital role in the digitization and preservation of scholarly publications. The products include books, internet access, journals, databases, newspapers and magazines and so on. The libraries comprise of Kashim Ibrahim Library of Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Federal college of Education, Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic and Ameer Shehu College of Advance studies Libraries all in Zaria Metropolis. Survey method was adopted for the research. The population was 377 respondents. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Tables, frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data. Librarians and more information employee need to continue to aspire for greatness in the discipline by constantly upgrading and improving their knowledge and competency as maintained by the IFLA code of ethics. Training of the librarians is a necessity which helps in assisting to carry out services that are acceptable. It is therefore paramount to study the assessment of the Knowledge for librarians and how it affects their job performance in the 21st century librarianship. A descriptive survey design was used for this study. The population of the study was 382 librarians from seven academic libraries in North- Central, Nigeria. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the investigation and the sampling technique used was census also known as total enumeration. The results shows that majority of the librarians have no adequate knowledge through training received and have not applied the knowledge for librarians effectively which leads to low performance on the job because most of these libraries do not have ICT knowledge such as; content curation and digital asset management . Nevertheless, they are not competent in applying the knowledge in discharging their duties. The paper concludes that Librarians should not focus on theoretical part of the profession but should emphasize on the application of knowledge of Librarianship on their job performance. Professional development is a lifelong learning and is indispensable for professional growth and instrumental for sustaining one’s competence. The library can also become more productive with new skills and knowledge acquired through professional development programs. The various professional development programs put in place by librarians include seminars, peer coaching, workshops, conferences, mentorship, courses, symposium real-time webcasts, and distance learning programs with interactive capabilities. The paper discusses the importance of professional development programs which includes updating knowledge and skills in existing and new areas of practice, keeping professional qualifications up-to-date, raising one’s profile through certifications and networking, making oneself more marketable to future employers, and obtaining new improved skills-making challenges tasks easier. The study raised three research questions and answers were sought to them, among which are the types of information services provided by mobile communication network to customers in Zaria metropolis, customers satisfaction level, and their intension to change network providers regarding information service quality. Survey research method was adopted for the study and data was collected from the sample of 1,269 out of the total population study of 1534. The data were analyzed descriptively using frequency tables, percentage, mean, and mode. The study revealed that customers in Zaria metropolis are provided with a wide range of information services. It was also revealed that customers are partially satisfied with the overall services of call, SMS, Internet, and SIM card service in the entire networks. It is recommended that attention should be directed toward services with lower satisfaction by setting a target using a set of benchmark of ACSI and N.C.C standard of communication services, to serve as a guide for mobile network industries and telecommunication industries to raise the satisfaction level so as to maintain the market share, maintain and generate their customersItem Digital preservation Strategies in the Federal University Libraries in the North West Nigeria(Kenya Library and Information Science Consortium (KLISC), 2022-05-25) Jimada, Aisha; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jibril, Attahiru AlhassanDigital preservation involves those activities that are carried out in libraries to protect their information resources that are born digital or those converted from analogue to digital form from loss and deterioration and to ensure long-term access to it despite the current changes in technology. This paper investigates the types of information resources digitized, the strategies used by the federal university libraries in North West Nigeria to preserve them so that they will remain accessible for use and reuse and the challenges facing it .Continuous access to digital information remain difficult even after they are preserved. A qualitative research method was adopted for the study; a purposive sampling technique was adopted and a structured interview was the instrument used to collect data for the study. The responses from the respondents were analyzed descriptively using tables. The result of the findings showed that theses, dissertations, preprint and post print journals are the common information resources digitise and preserved while refreshing and technology preservation are some of the strategies use , external hard drive is the storage media use . Erratic power is one of the challenges facing digital preservation. Based on the findings, the study concluded that digital preservation of information resources is carried out in the digitization unit of the libraries studied. Digitised resources are preserved in external hard discs, servers and most importantly in Institutional repositories. Organizational learning is an area of knowledge within organizational theory that studies the way an organization learns and adapts. Organizational Learning involves making tacit theories of action explicit so that people can become aware of, critically examine, and change them. It facilitates accountability by increasing self-awareness and enhancing the ability to exercise conscious choice and intention. Knowledge assets as stocks of knowledge from which services are expected to flow for a period of time that they may be hard to specify in advance with an economic life viable with industry and market context. Zaria. Nigeria, 2015) Gwari, Williams Habiba; Esew, Micheal; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Jimada, AishaThe study aimed at examining the factors that influence the attitude of teacher librarians toward information technology in Kaduna State Secondary Schools. Survey research method was adopted. The study population comprises all the five hundred and four (504) schools. Out of this population two hundred and sixty- four (264) was used as sample size for the study. Questionnaire was the instruments used for data collection. The data collected were presented and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that teacher librarians have positive attitude toward information technology as shown from the respondents who opined that information technology can enhance student learning. The study also found that the possible constraints which tend to have unanimous consensus among the respondents were inadequate trainings on the job, lack of access to technology, poor infrastructure/ social facilities and the epileptic power supply which adversely limit use of the technologies in secondary schools. The inferential analysis showed that the constraints to information technology usage in the secondary schools are positively correlated with the attitude of the teacher librarians towards the information technology use for teaching and learning in the schools. The study concluded that inadequacy of information technology resources, lack of confidence, anxiety, inadequate training, and lack of access to technology, poor infrastructure/ social facilities and epileptic power supply were some of the constraints that significantly influence the teacher librarians’ attitude towards information technology usage in the schools.Item Factors to Consider in Formulating Library and Information Science Curriculum for the 21st Century(Faculty of Education Federal Univeresity of Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria, 2021-11-08) Jimada, Aisha; Goshie, Rhoda Wusa; Sambo, SuleimanThe purpose of Library and Information Science education is to educate individuals for career as librarians and information specialists to undertake instruction, research and service programs that will assist them meet up with current and emerging library and information need. This paper discussed factors to consider in library schools while formulating library and information science curriculum in the 21st century. The study found out that staff, instructional technology, open distance education, choice base, need base curriculum and need for national and international accreditation agency are some of the factors to consider in order to meet up with the current trend in the 21st century and job market. The paper also found out some of the inadequate infrastructure, / instructional facilities, lack of information and communication technology skills and outdated library and information science curriculum are some of the challenges facing library and information science and will continue to have problem in the digital era, these challenges can only be met if educators, library and information professionals work together and bring improvement through the curriculum with a great impact on work places. With the continued globalization of knowledge, the changes in knowledge, the changes in knowledge creation, the generation of non- print formats(e.g, multimedia and digital), the rapid expansion of wireless technology, and the need to increase the level of sharing of information/ resources, it is now time to begin the development of a global information policy. Emphasis was made on the global information policies of some selected sectors in Nigeria. The information policies discussed in this paper were the health information policy, educational information policy, telecommunication information policy, freedom of information legislation policy, intellectual property rights,citizen charter of information rights and regulations of telephones and cable systems policies. The state of the information policy and challenges were highlighted. Conclusion and recommendations were given based on the four cornerstones of information activities in the country.
