Item Environmental Effects of Road Construction Waste(. USEP: Journal of Research Information in Civil Engineering, 2023-02-12) Kolo, S. S.; Abdulrahman, H. S.; Kolo, D. N.; Shehu, M.; Adamu, H. N.,; Eze, F. E.This research work investigates the various waste streams generated during road construction and their effect on environment. The method employed in this research work is categorized into waste type generated on construction site using reconnaissance surveys, data collection and data analysis methods. Four construction project sites in Minna, Nigeria, were used with the aim that these sites will provide a platform to acquire valuable data. It was discovered that mortar or concrete waste and wood waste has the highest percentage of 22% to 39% and asphalt has about 4 % waste and this was largest percentage of waste generated and this was mainly due to the human error, the use of inadequately trained and unskilled labour. The study however made case for adequate attention and concentration towards improving effective waste management by implementing proper waste management and disposal systems and encouraging the use of recycled materials in road construction. This will greatly reduce the cost of construction, increase efficiency, reduce work time and replenish the earths rapidly depleting natural resources used in construction like wood and bitumen.Item Investigation of headway distribution of traffic dominated by motorcycles(8th Advanced Engineering Days (AED) – 8 December 2023 – Mersin, Türkiye, 2023) Abdulrahman, H. S.; Kolo, S. S.; Abubakar, Mahmud; Shehu, M.The use of lower class vehicles such as two or three wheelers have become the preferred urban transport in some developing countries. However, most of the traffic theories adopted are from developed countries where cars are prevalent. The headway probability distribution models can be used to describe vehicle-to-vehicle interactions. Most of these distributions are parametric and makes an underlining assumption about the data. A case study was conducted to investigate the performance of the different probability distributions that best describes the vehicle to vehicle interaction of motorcycle dominated road in Bida, Niger state Nigeria. The different parametric distributions and non-parametric distribution (Kernel) of the data were tested for the goodness-of-fit. The test results indicate that the kernel distribution fits best with improved P-values which in turn gives a better description for the headways than other distribution models considered. K.,; Ozioku, J.O; Fetuga, I.A.The mechanical and performance characteristics of cold mix asphalt derived from straight-run bitumen blended with dissolved polythene were assessed to determine the engineering, environmental, and economic feasibility of a recently developed product for pavement maintenance. The cold mix asphalt binder was created by treating a portion of straight-run bitumen with chemically dissolved polythene waste sachets at a temperature of approximately 80 C, employing an alkaline emulsifier, chemical surfactant, and water. The formulation for the cold mix asphalt involved 35% coarse aggregates, 65% fine aggregate, and 10% mineral filler, with an optimal binder content of 8.3%. Standard laboratory Marshall tests, static loading/unloading in both laboratory and field settings, and real-time traffic loads were applied to the cold asphalt mixes to establish comparative performance. The Marshall Stability, flow, and density of the experimental cold mix asphalt were determined as 5.08 kN, 4.0 mm, and 1.98 g/cm3, respectively. In comparison, the corresponding values for the other three commercially available cold asphalt mixes ranged from 0 to 4.27 kN, 0 to 5.5 mm, and 1.60 to 1.85 g/cm3. The rate of deformation of experimental cold mix with respect to time and traffic load respectively 0.0086 mm/week and 0.00877 mm/standard 80 kN standard axle, which are more favorable than the corresponding values for the commercial mixes.Item Reliability Assessment of Natural Aggregate Pulverized Glass Powder Concrete Beam Subjected to Shearing Forces(Journal of Computational Engineering and Physical Modeling, 2023-01-02) Kolo, D. N.; Kolo, S. S.; Abdulazeez, M. H.Cement is the most expensive ingredient in the process of making concrete. Reducing the quantity of cement used in the production of concrete with Pulverized glass powder (PGP) will reduce the cost of concrete production and help tackle environmental, disposal and CO2 emission challenges. The results of structural reliability assessment performed on Pulverized glass powder concrete produced using locally sourced Natural aggregate (NA) as coarse aggregate. Concrete cubes measuring 150 × 150 ×150 mm were cast, cured for 28 days and tested using the universal compressive testing machine. First order reliability method (FORM) was employed to determine the level of safety of the reinforced concrete beam. Result of sensitivity analysis under shearing forces shows the beam is structurally safe at a span of 3250 mm with Probability of failure (Pf) of 1.14 × 10-3 , Effective depth of 459 mm and corresponding Probability of failure (Pf) of 5.77 × 10-8 and an Area of Shear reinforcement (Asv) of 201 mm2 with Probability of failure (Pf) of 5.01 × 10-5 .
