Item Cross Job Transferability Skills Required by Technical and Vocational Education Graduates for Curbing Unemployment in Niger State(4th International Conference of School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE), 2016) Raymond, E.; Ojeme, J. S.This study was designed to determine the cross job transferability skills required by Technical and Vocational Education graduates for curbing unemployment in Niger State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A total of 50 respondents comprising of ten (10) Technical and Vocational Education lecturers in Federal University of Technology, Minna, twenty (20) Technical and Vocational Education graduates already working in Niger State, and twenty(20) employers of labour. Two research questions guided the study. The instrument for data collection was a five point scale questionnaires titled: Cross Job Transferability Skills Questionnaires (CJTSQ). Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Finding revealed that: Appropriate expression of feelings, understanding and respect of the feelings of others; working effectively and productively with others; and defining and accepting individual and group roles and responsibilities are among the required transferable skills needed for cross job mobility of Technical and Vocational Education graduate. It was also discovered that redesigning programmes to include content that are vocationally oriented; and allowing students to discover and develop skills by themselves are techniques for improving the acquisition of cross job transferability skills of technical and vocational education graduates. It was therefore recommended that greater recognition and promotion of transferable skills to enhance flexibility in cross-occupational mobility should be encouraged in Technical and Vocational Education. Also, teachers and employment facilitators should help Technical and Vocational Education graduates recognize and understand their transferable skills.Item Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Economic Development in Nigeria in the 21st Century. W.Item Mechanisms for Improving Manpower Production in Occupational and Technical Education(ATBU Journal of Technology and Educational Research (JOTER), 2013) Atsume, B. O.This study was designed to identify mechanisms for improving the quantity and quality of manpower production in vocational and technical education in Kogi State. Four research questions and hypotheses guided the study. The study was carried out in Kogi State of Nigeria and the areas of study specifically are technical colleges, secondary schools, polytechnics and industries. Population of the study comprised two hundred (200) technology education teachers and seventy-five industrial personnel drawn from the area of study. A 30-items questionnaire was used to collect the relevant data. The research questions and hypotheses were analyzed using mean standard deviation and t-test statistics. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results from the data showed that technology teachers and head of technical departments and unit from the industries shared similar views with (30 or 73.4%) of the mechanisms proposed. Specifically it discovered that there is no strong tie between industries and training institutions, students industrial work experience scheme is haphazardly organized, the training facilities and entrants into the training institutions are poor and the administration of these training institutions were left in the hands of non-vocational educators. Based on the findings, it was recommended, that government should immediately conduct a national survey on manpower needs in vocational and technical education, remunerations of technical teachers should be reviewed urgently; industries should go into partnership with training institutions in drawing up a training programmes and government should liaise with industries to ensure the remittance of 5% of their annual profit the development of technical education.Item Repositioning Vocational and Technical Education for effective manpower production in Nigeria(International Organization of Scientific Research, 2012) Atsumbe, B.N.; Raymond, E.; Igwe, C.O.; Atsumbe, J.A.To meet the challenges of technological change that can support economic growth and to guarantee equal access to opportunities and employment, Vocational and Technical Education must be available to a substantially greater proportion of young people and adult alike. In this paper Vocational and Technical Education has been identified as the most reliable veritable vehicle that can be used in preparing skilled manpower for the nation. Major constraints to vocational and technical education such as historical legacy from colonial rule, societal attitudes government lip service to vocational education, lack of adequate teaching man power, problems of management and organization of VTE, relevance of curriculum, poor state of infrastructures and training equipment amongst others. The paper also made a number repositioning strategies for quality manpower production. These includes a general re-orientation of the concept of Vocation; re-organization and management of Vocational education; new capacity building strategy for Vocational teachers, new funding approach, collaboration with employers accreditation and automatic streaming of students among others.
