Librarians, as guardians of information, have vital role in disseminating accurate information to the public. This research paper explores the potential of the field of librarianship in countering health misinformation. The study examines existing literature on the societal role of librarians in combating misinformation. Additionally, interviews were conducted with all librarians from tertiary institutions in Minna metropolis to investigate their roles in disseminating factual information during the Covid-19 outbreak. The research explores the strategies employed by librarians to combat misinformation, the challenges they faced in this endeavour, and assesses the impact of these strategies on mitigating Covid-19 misinformation. The study delves into both the misinformation encountered by the community and the persisting beliefs in misinformation. Furthermore, it investigates the channels through which communities receive health information. The paper outlines effective initiatives within the Library and Information Systems (LIS) profession, emphasizing recommendations for librarians to enhance their role in the digital age contribute successfully to the field of public health. Seven librarians from all tertiary libraries in the Minna metropolis were interviewed. Additionally, One Hundred (100) residents from ten communities were randomly selected to fill out questionnaires to ascertain the impact tertiary libraries have on misinformation in the communities. Only librarians from health institutions attempted to educate the communities, with little impact felt.Item Assessment of Plagiarism in Undergraduate Projects in the Department of Library and Information Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State(Nigerian Libraries: Journal of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), 2017) Abduldayan, F.J.; Obaje, A.M.; Oyedum, G.U.The study examined students' plagiarism in undergraduate final year projects for the 2014/2015 academic session in the Department of Library and Information Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna. Turnitin anti-plagiarism software was used in checking the similarity index and percentage of plagiarized content in the students’ projects. The acceptable benchmark for similarity index was 20% in line with the University policy. All the cases of plagiarism are treated as a case of examination misconduct by the University. The study utilized the analysis of Turnitin anti-plagiarism software as the method for determining the rate of plagiarism. The total population of 42 students for the 2014/2015 was considered, of which 31 (73.8%) successfully trained in their work and graduated with percentages ranging from 14% to 20% similarity indices. The study determined different tricks and methods adopted by students in manipulating the results of Turnitin in order to get the acceptable percentages. Findings revealed some of the challenges faced by students while using Turnitin for plagiarism check. These included students’ lack of paraphrasing skills, time constraints, and lack of continuous monitoring of students’ progress by faculty instructors. The study concluded that Turnitin has helped improve students’ work integrity among students and staff and has also ensured integrity in intellectual outputs emanating from the university. This has led to the increased research visibility and academic ranking of the Federal University of Technology, Minna on the Web. The study recommended that the University should encourage all students to start turning in their work early and not at the end of the project, as this would give them time to paraphrase their work before submission deadlines. The need for comprehensive training on how to paraphrase contents was also recommended.Item Development of Library System Automation Software: A Study of Federal University of Technology, Minna Library(Lapai Journal of Management Science, Lapai, 2016) Oyedum, G.U; Abduldayan, F.J; Amos, V.The paper examined the provision of automated software for Library services in Nigerian Universities, using Federal University of Technology, Minna Library as a case study. The system design methodology was used in the study. The general objective of this study is to explore the potentials of providing effective and efficient library services of record-keeping of books and users; and giving easy access to these records to users when needed, using a desktop Java application at the University Library. This software is used to register students and staff, new books that arrive the circulation unit, lend out books to users and-make returning of the books easy. With the software, the library staff can view user record, edit the record, and calculate fine of defaulters automatically. The software can also send e-mail to various users/members who default in returning borrowed Library books. The software also generates report for the Chief Administrator to view activities carried out in various units of the Library. This software was designed and developed with Java Programming Language. The software will enhance Library services and boost professional standing of the librarian as well. Based on this study, it is recommended that provision of digital library services in Federal University of Technology Minna as well as other tertiary institutions of learning should be implemented in line with current global digital trend.Item Development of Marking Scheme(In Ohize, E.J. et al (Eds). Sokoto, University Press, 2019) Akor, P.U; Udoudoh, S.J; Abduldayan, F.J.One of the most recurring and difficult situations in classroom practice is assessing the quality and quantity of learning that has taken place. This is because teaching has intended outcomes that are geared towards behavioural change. In this regard, a good teacher assesses the progress of the students through tests, assignments among others using standardized criteria. It goes without saying that adopting a standard for marking students’ scripts is a fantastic tool to help teachers ensure that marking is consistent across all students’ scripts in a particular examination, test or assignment. Hence, this unit explores the development of a good marking scheme suitable for eliminating teachers’ biasness when marking.Item Effect of Migration from Analogue (Traditional) to digital (web based) readers’ services in University libraries in Niger state(NLA Ekiti State, 2022) Salubuyi, M.A.; Madu, E. C., & Uno, Comfort, A.; Uno, C. A.Purpose: This study examined migrating from traditional to web-based readers’ services in university libraries in Niger-State, Nigeria. It is generally believed that there is an ongoing activity of introducing web-based readers’ services in university libraries. Design/methodology//approach: To carry out this research, stratified (proportional random) sampling was used to gather the necessary data. Two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated for the study. Salant and Dillmans method of sample size determination was used to select 381 respondents out of a population size of 27,003 of both users and librarians in some selected academic libraries in Niger-State. A close ended questionnaire was developed which was used to collect the data for this study. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was determined using Cronbach alpha method and it was found to be 0.87. The data gathered from the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistic of mean, standard deviation and inferential statistic of Z-test. Findings: The major findings of this study revealed that is a significant difference between the opinions of library users on the migration process from traditional library services in Niger-State. Based on these findings, it was concluded that migration from traditional library services to web based library services is underway in university libraries in Niger-state and the acceptance and usability of this new form of service is slow compared to the available equipment for this new form of service. It was recommended that to ensure better migration process, academic libraries, should update their knowledge in web-based services and also sensitize their users on the availability of these services in their libraries. It was also recommended that special funds should be made available for smooth transition process. Originality/Value: the study has been able to establish that there is an ongoing migration activity from traditional to web based library services in university libraries in Niger state, but the process is not as fast as compared to their counterparts around the world due to certain factors. The results of this research may be useful to tertiary institutions in Nigeria as a whole.Item Effect of Resourcefulness on the Research Productivity of LIS Educators in Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, 2020-07-01) Babalola, G.A.; Omame, I.M.; Salubuyi, M.A.; Gana, Leah Yebo; Uno, C.A.; Saidu, A.A.Research productivity is the crux of measuring and valuating the performance of Educators in any institution of higher learning. Research productivity in particular is crucial to the overall development of both the institutions of higher learning and of the individual faculty. To enhance the ranking and standard of higher institutions of learning in this digital age, the research output of Educators are normally displayed in institutions’ repositories. One of the indicators of progress and which is usually used as yardstick for career progression and elevation of faculties in higher institutions of learning is research productivity. Research productivity of faculty including Library and Information Science (LIS) Educators might not receive a boost if they are not resourceful. The study was located to Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Two (2) research questions were asked and answered. The research design was descriptive survey. The Total population for the study was (12) LIS Educators from six (6) higher institutions in Nasarawa State. Only (2) of the institutions run LIS programme. Specifically, Federal University Lafia and Nasarawa State Polytechnic Lafia, hence they were purposively selected for the study. Total enumeration (census) technique was used to cover the entire target population. Twelve (12) copies of the questionnaire administered were all returned having a response rate of 100%. The research questions were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that resourcefulness greatly enhanced the research productivity of LIS Educators in the two higher institutions running LIS programme in Nasarawa State Nigeria, as revealed in their mean scores for all the items/constructs outlined to demonstrate qualities of resourcefulness respectively. The study recommended that LIS Educators in Nasarawa State, Nigeria should be trained and imparted with skills to be more resourceful, since it has positive influence on their research productivity. J; Habib, T.O; Yelwa, I.M; Danjuma, F.COVID-19 pandemic has drastically shutdown academic activities and other extra-curricular activities that students engage in. For this reason, most students venture into developing their entrepreneurial activities which created a means of adapting to the new normal. This study was carried out to assess the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on students’ perspectives on entrepreneurship using a case study of Federal University of Technology, Minna. In order to achieve this study, four research objectives and research questions were constructed. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. Simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of379 students in Federal University of Technology, Minna. Closed-ended questionnaire and interview were used to collect data and responses were gotten from 355 participants. Data collected were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and percentages. The findings showed that COVID-19 had positive impacts on the students' perspectives of entrepreneurship. Therefore, it was recommended that the university management should introduce more courses that are entrepreneurial inclined into the curriculum and provide conducive environment that will help to promote entrepreneurial programs.Item Influence of Social Media on Masters Students Learning Activities(School of Science and Technology Education, Federal Univerity of Technology, Minna, 2021-12-01) Gana, Leah YeboThis study uncovers the influence of social media on Masters’ Students learning activities. The research intends to find out how often Masters’ Students use social network sites and the social network site most commonly used. The study also discovered what social network site best supports student academic task and who students interact with over these network sites. An online survey was sent through email and Facebook to Masters Students in some Universities in England. The survey questions contained four questions. However the results of survey showed that a high percentage of students were neutral as to social network site improving their academic performance. A high percentage of students showed that network sites aid distribution of articles and files relevant to course work. The kind of problems that were solved over these network sites included Assignments, research works and general knowledge. Finding out people students interact with over these sites, results showed a high percentage of interaction between class mates and other friends. Although there are some limitations to this study, it is recommended that universities encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing among mentors, tutors, course mates and others using social network sites.Item Librarian's emotional intelligence and proficiency as correlates of electronic collection development in universities in North-central, Nigeria(FUGUS International Journal of Library and Information Science, 2024) Agyo, E; Madu, E. J.The study examined librarians' emotional intelligence and proficiency as correlate of electronic resources collection development (ERCD) in universities in North-central, Nigeria. The objectives considered were to: find out the relationship between librarians' proficiency and ERCD in university libraries in North-central, Nigeria; and determine librarians' emotional intelligence and ERCD in these university libraries. Correlational research design was used. The total population for study was 400 librarians. Multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted to stratify the university into Federal, State and Private Universities. Questionnaire was used to collect data. SPSS was used for the quantitative analysis and result were presented using frequency, mean, and standard deviation. The result of the study showed that proficiency skills in database, social media, online public access catalogue, e-document and e-book delivery, data management, storage of electronic resources, e-processing, and e-ordering by librarians has a relationship on electronic resources collection development in university libraries. The findings also revealed that librarians possessed self-awareness skills, self-regulatory skills, motivational skills, empathy skills, and social skills, and It has influenced the ERCD in the studied university libraries. The study concluded that addressing the identified deficiencies in proficiency, and emotional intelligence can lead to a more effective and efficient electronic resources collection development, thereby improving the overall academic and research experience for library users. Therefore, the study recommended that training that will boost the emotional intelligent of librarians by the management should be done regularly.Item Library Education and Training in Nigeria 1962-2022: A Development of Framework for Skills Needs by LIS Graduate for Functionality and Relevance in the 4IR Era(Proceedings of Nigeria Library Association (NLA) @ 60 Conference, 2022) Tella, A.; Uwaifo, Stephen, O.; Abduldayan, F. J.This study examined library education and training in Nigeria 1962-2022, with the purpose of developing a framework for skills needs by LIS graduate for functionality and relevance in the 4IR era. A qualitative approach was adopted using documents analysis of documents downloaded from Web of Science, Research Gate, and Francis and Taylor databases from which a total of 45 retrieved articles were used as data source for the study. Three broad themes were revealed in the information search: namely, LIS education and training in Nigeria, fourth industrial revolution (4IR), library and information science skills and skills development. The findings demonstrate that the curriculum contents is adequate in part but the graduates are found wanting in its inadequate since they cannot applied the skills they acquired through the curriculum contents in their place of work. It was found that LIS have skills to cataloging, index, reference, develop collections, compile bibliographies; partially* search and retrieve information, while rare skills include web-design, database management, trouble-shooting and coding, data analysis, among others. This indicates that LIS graduates in Nigeria mostly possess traditional skills from the three categories in the study and are lacking the fundamental novel skills required by LIS graduates reported in the study are critical thinking, complex problem-solving skills, intelligence, negotiation, people management and decision-making, emotional intelligence, negotiation, cognitive flexibility, and judgment and decision-making, emotional intelligence. The study developed a conceptual framework which serves as basis for the future related studies in Library and Information Science research.Item Mentoring, Collaborative Researches and ICT Versatility as Influencing Factors on Research Productivity of LIS Educators in Nigeria.(Zeh Communications, 2020) Babalola, G.A.; Saidu, A.A.; Abubakar, U.; Uno, C.A; Gana, Leah Yebo; Tauheed, H.N.The paper described the extent to which mentoring, collaborative researches and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) versatility could serve as influencing factors on research productivity of Library and Information Science (LIS) educators in Nigeria. One of the major determinants of profitability of the faculty including LIS educators is research productivity. While it is true that faculty members are expected to teach and carry out other responsibilities in the academia, their research productivity remains a strong yardstick in determining their level of relevance. The research productivity of LIS educators would, under normal circumstances, receive a boost if there is cordial and fruitful mentoring among colleagues especially between the senior faculty and junior faculty. In this information driven age, LIS educators who are highly skillful in the use of ICT in information handling-accessing, collating, utilising and disseminating information would definitely be productive in terms of research productivity. With the limitless opportunities that the digital age has made possible, LIS educators who are properly mentored and who are active in knowledge collaboration coupled with ICT versatility would definitely be super productive in terms of research output. The paper concluded that mentoring is one of the major media of creating cordial and functional lasting relationship which, afterwards, influences the research productivity of LIS educators. It was recommended that mentoring programme in higher institutions of learning should be renewed and formalised to elicit the best from the mentors and mentees with a view of boosting the research productivity of both parties.Item Populating Institutional Repositories in Nigeria using Research Data: Challenges and Prospect(Embracing Innovation in the Changing World of Information and Libraries, 2024) Abduldayan, F. J.; Abduldayan, A. H.; Abubakar, N. U.Institutional Repositories (IR) are the storehouse of knowledge and intellectual outputs emanating from a research institution. The contents vary from journal articles, conference proceedings, inaugural lectures, theses and dissertations, and research data (datasets). Research data is any information that has been collected, observed, generated, or created to validate original research findings. This study explored the prospects and challenges of depositing research data in the IR focusing on university libraries in the five federal universities of technology in Nigeria, namely: Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMIN), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola (MAUTECH), and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi (ATBU). Four (4) research questions were formulated while qualitative data was collected from the five University Librarians using interview guides. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, and findings revealed that four FUTs have an existing IR, although there is low upload of research data on the repository. Librarians have the required skills to offer research data management services, even though the service is yet to be deployed to researchers in the university community. Recommendations include the need for continuous advocacy by the library on research data management and policy formulation by the university management to encourage the need for depositing research data in the Institutional Repository.Item Privacy and National Security Issues in Social Networks: The Challenges(International Journal of the Computer, the Internet and Management, Thailand, 2011-09-13) Shafi’i M. We also looked at how it can be used to distort national security, how it became the new weapons of mass mobilization and also how social networks have became the rallying forces for revolutions and social justice.Item Research data management and information security: Role of Library and Information Technology Service (ITS) units in federal universities of technology in Nigeria(I-Manager’s Journal on Information Technology, 2019) Abduldayan, F. A.This exploratory study presents how information security affects research data management in all the Federal Universities of Technology (FUTs) in Nigeria. These FUTs in Nigeria are: The Federal University of Technology, Minna; Federal University of Technology, Akure; Federal University of Technology, Owerri; Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola; and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. Lack of trust in the available security systems and safety procedures guiding the Institutional Repositories (IR) has been identified as a perceived impediment to depositing intellectual outputs and the underlying research data by researchers. The consequence of this is poor patronage of the IR and low content of repositories of FUTs in Nigeria. The objective of this study was therefore to identify the available support systems in the Libraries and Information Technology Service (ITS) Units of FUTs in Nigeria. The study used face-to-face semi-structured interview methods conducted on five university librarians and five heads of ITS Units of FUTs in Nigeria, who are responsible for the development and management of institutional repositories and are also stakeholders in effective research data management. For data transcription and analysis, this study adopted the Braun and Clarke (2006) thematic analysis approach, which involves a six-phase qualitative data analysis. Findings of the study confirmed that hacking, as a cyber threat, still poses a great threat to intellectual output and research data deposited in the IR of FUTs in Nigeria. The study recommended the need for continued capacity building to improve the cybersecurity skills and data management skills of ITS staff and librarians, respectively.Item Research data management practices of chemistry researchers in federal universities of technology in Nigeria(Digital Library Perspectives, 2021) Abduldayan, F.J.; Abifarin, F.P.; Oyedum, G.U.; Alhassan, J.A.This is an exploratory study on the research data management practice of chemistry researchers in federal universities of technology in Nigeria. Research data are increasingly becoming important and are required by journal publishers and international funders to be carefully gathered and properly kept for validation of results, sharing, and future reuse. These chemistry researchers were purposively selected across the five federal universities of technology in Nigeria, namely Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMIN), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University of Technology, Bauchi (ATBU), and Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola (MAUTECH). A qualitative research technique using a semi-structured interview schedule was used to gather data from forty (40) chemistry researchers across the five federal universities of technology in Nigeria. These chemistry researchers were those with either a doctoral degree or currently undergoing doctoral training across all available options and ranks in chemistry. Interview questions were divided into four major sections covering chemistry researchers’ understanding of research data, experience with data loss, data storage methods and backup techniques, data protection, data preservation, and the availability of a data management plan. Findings, as derived from thematic analysis of transcribed responses, revealed that chemistry researchers' research data management practices need a lot of improvement to ensure long-term access, preservation, and reuse of their research data. The study recommended the need for libraries to embark on awareness and education of chemistry researchers on the benefits of good research data management practices.Item The Role of Academic Libraries in Enhancing Workflow in African Universities(Proceedings of the International Conference on Information and Communication Technology and Its Applications, School of Information and Communication Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2016) Abduldayan, F.J.; Dang, T.L.; Karemani, A.; Obadia, S.B.An academic library may be beautifully designed but with little impact on the research output of its users. This study identified these gaps with reference to African libraries. Researchers, irrespective of their areas of interest, have a common research workflow which defines the entire research process. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be embedded at every level of the workflow, creating an enabling research environment to ease research processes and better output. Academic librarians, as part of their role in supporting teaching, learning, and research, are expected to introduce, advocate, and create awareness and offer support services on available relevant products and services that can be embedded at every level of the research workflow. This study identified new products and services and suggested how they should be embedded through the research process. The study concluded that embedding these new products and services in research workflow will improve the quality of researches emanating from Africa and ultimately improve our research visibility globally.Item The use of libraries as tools for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria.(NLA, Ekiti State Chapter, 2022) Salubuyi, M.A.; Udensi, J.N.; Akor, P.U.; Bitagi,A.M.Purpose: This is a study on how the Niger State public libraries can be used as a tool to implement the sustainable development goals in Niger State in collaboratiom with Niger Sate Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) office and Nigerian Library Association (NLA) Niger State Chapter. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study adopted a descriptive research method while total enumeration method was used to gather information from 44 participants of SDGS awareness workshop. Two questionnaires were used for data collection. One before the the commencement of the workshop and the other, after the workshop. Findings: The findings revealed that developmental programmes that would improve the lives of people are welcome ideas. Findings from the gathered data revealed that the public library can work together with SDG Offices and other bodies to implement the SDGS. The study recommended that the Nigerian government should pay attention to public libraries in Nigeria and put them in a good and workable state to enable them carry out their duties efficiently. Another finding was that the activities of the Sustainable Development Goals could help to breathe life activities in the Nigerian public libraries. Originality/Value: Based on the literature reviewed, the way forward is rehabilitation and equipping of the Nigerian Public libraries with information communication technology components that can help fast track dissemination of information to the people.
