Strengthening Youth Empowerment Programmes through Technical anf Vocational Education and Training; A Strategy for Reducing Unemployment in Nigeria
(Book of Proceeding of 25th Annual National Conference of Nigerian Association of Teachers of TechnologyAt, 2012) Nwankwo, F. C.; Igwe, C. O.; Ibrahim, D.
There has been growing concern about the rate of unemployment and underemployment among Nigerian Youths and graduates. This has increased the crime and poverty rate of the nation. The federal government, international and non governmental organizations have introduced some youth empowerment programmes to curb the problem of unemployment in Nigeria. Nonetheless, these programmes have not been effective and accessible for the youths. This is because of the poor content of some of the programmes for the reasons that they do not appropraitely incorporate Vocational Technical Education and training in its programme content. Vocational Education and Training which leads to applied and practical skills acquisition if properly integrated in youth empowerment programmes will strengthen the programmes and thereby reduce unemployment to the minimum.

The study investigated the healthy indoor environmental quality practices adopted in three star hotels in Abuja. Indoor environmental quality is one of the key dimensions of green building practices. The population of the study was 114 (89 facility managers and 25 registered builders). Two research questions were raised and two hypotheses tested at .05 level of significance guided the study. The instrument for data collection was a 20-items Questionnaire on Healthy indoor Environmental Quality Practices in Three Star Hotels (QHIEQPTSH) developed by the researcher. The questionnaire was validated by three building technology experts in the Department of Industrial and Technology Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State. A pilot test of the instrument was carried out in Lafia, Nasarawa State. The Crobach Alpha coefficient method was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument and 0.80 was obtained as the overall reliability coefficient of the instrument. Data collected was analyzed and mean and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions while Z-test analysis was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed among others that 10 Healthy Indoor Environmental Quality Practices are presently adopted in Three Star Hotels in Abuja. It was also found that there is no significant difference between the mean ratings of facility managers and registered builders on the healthy indoor environmental quality practices adopted in three star hotels in Abuja. Based on these findings therefore, it was recommended among others that healthy indoor environmental quality practices should be adopted in other categories of hotels in Abuja in order to not only ensure the comfort and wellbeing of hotel customers, but to also preserve the environment.

The study investigated the effect of practice based enquiry cycle on students’ psychomotor achievement and interest in welding and fabrication engineering craft practice in Kano State. The Study had four objectives, answered for research questions and tested for null hypothesis at 0.05 significant level. A quasi-experimental, the pre-test, post-test, non-experimental control group design was employed for the study. Three technical colleges in Kano State were used. The sample for the study consisted of 160 National Technical Certificate II (NTCII) Students from two intact classes. The classes were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The instrument used for the study was Welding and Fabrication Craft Practice Achievement Test (WFCPAT) and Welding and Fabrication Interest Inventory (WFII). Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) Formula was used for WFCPAT and Cronbach Alpha was used for WFII reliability coefficient of 0.88 and 0.80 respectively. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer research questions and ANCOVA was used to test hypotheses. The findings of this study showed that there was significant difference in the psychomotor achievement students taught welding and fabrication engineering craft practice using base enquiry cycle and those taught using demonstration method and there was no significant difference in the interest level of students thought welding and fabrication engineering craft practice using practice based enquiry cycle based on gender. The strategy therefore, was recommended to be used by the technical college teachers in the teaching of welding and fabrication engineering craft practice and metal work in general. Also, government should provide tools and equipment needed to teach the state-of –the –art of mental work in the technical colleges.

Standardization and Cost Effectiveness in Construction for Sustainable Development
(Proceedings of the Builders’ Conference /Annual General Meeting, 2019) Igwe, C. O.; Usman, N. D.
The ongoing challenges faced in building industry, such as poor quality construction, low profitability and high construction costs, results in demands for higher value, cost saving, better quality and longer guarantees in construction finds solution in standardization and cost effectiveness in construction for sustainable development. Sustainable development is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs, it cuts across environmental, social and economic factors. Sustainable construction therefore, should ensure the design, construction and effective management of the built environment on prudent use of available resources. The goal of cost effectiveness in construction is to save money while also maintaining building quality. This paper therefore, focuses on principles of sustainability in construction industry – challenges and benefits, implementation of standardization and cost effectiveness in the construction sector – barriers and the way forward. Council of Registered Builder of Nigeria is making frantic efforts in achieving its mandate on standardization and sustainability of the construction industry. This will need the contributions and support of other stakeholders in the construction sector. When this is effectively implemented, many benefits are gained by the company, staff, clients, constructors and built environment professionals. Nevertheless, the implementation of standardization for a sustainable construction sector is associated with certain challenges which can be handled by constantly strategizing ways of educating and enforcing of the standards, projecting the benefits and rewarding companies for sustainable standardization best practices.

    Understanding Sustainability in Building Construction
    (Proceedings of the Builder's Conference and Annual General Meeting, 2021) Bustani, A. B.; Igwe, C. O.; Usman, N. D.; Adamu, S.
Construction industry makes a significant contribution to the growth and development of every economy by providing infrastructure for productive ventures, shelter to the citizens and generating employment to people at different levels of knowledge and skills. It is the backbone of economic development globally. The construction industry can be vibrant when technologies, systems, materials and the processes are of quality standards. Issues of energy consumption, wastage, water and air pollution threatens the health and safety of the people as well as the built environment. The sustainability will not be feasible when the Construction industry have performed below expectations evident by high rate of building collapses, non-compliance of health and safety, loss of lives and properties as well as lack of standards and quality infrastructure for economic development. This has greatly affected the living standards of an average Nigerian. Therefore, understanding sustainable building construction is hinge to pivot development in the construction sector. The method used for the research is exploratory based on relevant literature survey for better understanding of the sustainable building construction. The study concludes that maximizing the use of efficient building material and construction practices, optimizes the use of onsite resources and use of renewable sources of energy, use efficient waste management practices and provide comfortable and hygienic indoor working conditions.
